Adult Physical Q&A

What happens during an adult physical?

Your physical exam will begin with a personal and family medical history to look for risk factors for diseases and medical conditions. During the exam itself, you will be asked about any symptoms or issues you may be facing, and you will have time to ask health-related questions as well. Your weight and blood pressure will be measured, and your heart and lungs will be listened to with a stethoscope. Your belly will also be gently felt to check for signs of tenderness, your ankles may be checked for signs of swelling that could indicate circulatory problems, and your ears and throat will also be examined. Lab work and other tests may be ordered, and you may receive advice on healthy lifestyle changes.

How often should I have a physical exam?

The American Medical Association (AMA) recommends adults to have a physical exam every year, in order to provide an ongoing record of health that can be very effective in identifying diseases in their earliest stages. Seeing the doctor every year also ensures getting the most appropriate health screenings, and keeps track of vaccinations while insuring they are up to date.

What should I do to get ready for my physical exam?

You will need to provide a complete medical history for yourself and your immediate family members (parents and siblings, primarily), so be sure you know your family history of diseases to be able to include them on your form. Both personal and family medical information can be important in determining if you are at an increased risk for serious diseases. If you have had any medical or lab tests performed since your last office visit, be sure to have those results forwarded prior to your exam so they can be reviewed.
